The Georgia Encyclopedia features a 2020 biographical account, written by Ronald E. Butchart, on the life of Susie King Taylor, the only known African American woman to write an autobiography about the Civil War. Themes include Taylor's: upbringing in Midway, Georgia, escape from slavery, educational experiences in underground schools, life as a nurse, laundress and teacher of Black soldiers in the Union army, establishment of freedmen schools in Georgia after the Civil War, life as a domestic worker and the publishing of her autobiography in 1902.
