The Library of Congress presents an article from the June 14, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly on Roberts Smalls and his naval escape from slavery in Charleston, South Carolina. The downloadable article provides an account of Smalls, the enslaved pilot, the enslaved crew members and their families' escape from slavery by commandeering a Confederate gun vessel called "the Planter." The writer includes details from an interview with Smalls and two illustrations- one of Smalls and the other of the Planter.
