Description
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History presents a historical illustration, drawn by Lucius Stebbins, that depicts a Union soldiers reading the Emancipation Proclamation to an enslaved family, who is gathered around a table and listening eagerly, by the light of a torch. The article, written by an unknown author, provides a brief history of the delay in emancipation of the enslaved individuals in Texas, including General Gordon Granger's delivery of General Order No. 3 to the citizens of Galveston, Texas, freeing the slaves in Texas and becoming known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. According to the author of the article, Stebbin says that the historical illustration “represents the only way in which the glorious news could reach the . . . slaves, viz.: through the faithful soldier.”
