Chronicling America includes an article, "Notes from a Plantation," written by Simon Pure, appearing in the April 18, 1863 edition of The Free South newspaper. Pure provides a personal account of his affairs and experiences as part of a group of Northern abolitionist missionaries, also known as Gideonites, in the South Carolina Sea Islands.
