Chronicling America presents an article from the August 27, 1874 edition of the New Orleans Republican newspaper on Charlotte Forten- a Northern African American abolitionist, educator and writer. Forten shares her descriptive observations of the integrated classes she visited at the University of South Carolina. Themes include: the nature of the relationship between the Black and White male students, her opinions on "coeducation" at the University of South Carolina, her perspectives on integrated schools in the South and her own experience teaching in all White and in integrated schools in Massachusetts. This article states that these observations were previously written in another publication, the Christian Register newspaper.
