The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Marine Sanctuaries presents a report entitled, "The Search for the Planter: The Ship that Escaped Charleston and Carried Robert Smalls to Destiny" (2014). The report presents an account of the life of Robert Smalls - an enslaved Black man who later became a Congressman (R-SC) - and his crew members' extraordinary escape from slavery during the Civil War. The report focuses on the history of the vessel before and during the war, details about Smalls and his crew, the vessel's condition after the Civil War and its suspected modern day whereabouts.
