Chronicling America presents a March 12, 1863 article from the Litchfield Enquirer (CT) newspaper alleging Roberts Smalls' assessment of the number of potential Black recruits in Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC. The article makes reference to Smalls' escape from slavery by means of seizing a Confederate gunboat, called the Planter, in Charleston, South Carolina.
