Note: See column 2, 1st paragraph.
Chronicling America presents a May 30, 1862 article from the Weekly Pioneer and Democrat (MN), which includes a report sent to the U.S. Navy Department about a group of enslaved men that commandeered a Confederate gunboat ("the Planter") in Charleston, South Carolina. In Commander Enoch Greenleafe Parrott's report, he highlights the total number of people onboard and the Confederate weapons seized. The article also includes comments from Commodore Samuel Francis Dupont, who initially received the letter. Dupont provides an account of how the enslaved captain, Robert Smalls, and the other crew members seized the vessel, his perception of Smalls' intelligence and the value of the vessel. Lastly, a correspondent form Port Royal provided additional details about the event, which included the names of the crew members, how they picked up there family members during the escape, the reaction of the Union officers that received them and how Smalls had subsequently become a "hero among a portion of the American navy."
