The publication includes a collection of letters written by Pearson and other White Northern abolitionists during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Highlights include: descriptions of White Northerners sent to participate as teacher missionaries and government officials, the assistance they provided to the newly freed population, the living conditions and agricultural experiences of "contrabands" (formerly enslaved Black people in Union territory) and subjective descriptions of the local Black population's behavior, customs and traditions.
