This 1994 National Register of Historic Places Registration form presents Camp Saxton Site as a place of South Carolina historic value. The form highlights the contributions and major historical events involving Union Army Officer Rufus Saxton, the 1st South Carolina Volunteers (one of the first Black regiments in the Civil War) and the work of teacher missionaries during the Port Royal Experiment. Details from Elizabeth Ware Pearson's book called Letters from Port Royal Written at the Time of the Civil War (1906) are used as a reference.
