Themes include: the Rollin sisters' wealthy upbringing in South Carolina, the financial impact on the family after the Civil War and the rise of the "Rollin salon" in Columbia. Other themes include: Kate and Lottie's teaching experiences in Charleston, Lottie's creation of a South Carolina chapter of the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA), Frances' 1867 discrimination lawsuit and her writing on black abolitionist and Union soldier Martin R. Delany.
