The Library of Congress presents an 1866 political cartoon that depicts a caricature of an Black man in the foregound of a building labelled, "Freedmen's Bureau." The caption states: "Whar is de use for me to work as long as dey make dese appropriations." The image includes a lists of government expenses dedicated to the Bureau.
To the left of the frame, two white men are working, one chopping wood and the other plowing a field while a woman and child watch. The caption states: "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread;" and "The white man must work to keep his children and pay his taxes."
The general caption states: "The Freedman's Bureau! An agency to keep the Negro in idleness at the expense of the white man. Twice vetoed by the President, and made a lawy by Congress. Support Congress & you support the Negro Sustain the President & you protect the white man."
