The Library of Congress features an 1866 historical illustration, drawn by Alfred R. Waud, that depicts the marriage of an African Americans couple conducted by Chaplain Joseph Warren of the Freedmen's Bureau--which was created by the Freedmen's Bureau Act and provided aid to free African Americans and displaced Southerners after the Civil War. The chaplain and the couple are surrounded by a crowd of well dressed individuals.
The Freedmen's Bureau was a federal agency that was created to provide aid to displaced Southerners, including newly freed people, during and after the Civil War.
