Description
BlackPast features an 1888 historical speech, given by Frederick Douglass--a formerly enslaved African American, who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--at the International Council of Women in Washington, D.C., in which Douglass reflects on his involvement in the Women's Suffrage Movement and emphasizes his continued support for said movement. He says, "when I ran away form slavery, it was for myself; when I advocated emancipation, it was for my people; but when I stood up for the rights of woman, self was out of the question, and I found a little nobility in the act."
