This Library of Congress source features an 1861 historical portrait of Union Army General David Hunter by E. & H.T. Anthony Firm. Hunter is photographed standing in full military attire, facing and looking at the camera, with a sword in his left hand. The notes section of this source includes Hunter's controversial proclamation that declared three Southern states- Georgia, Florida, South Carolina- under martial law and emancipated enslaved people within those states in 1862.
