Description
Be Woke presents a video that is part of the Black History in Two Minutes (or so) series, titled, "Land: Giving Rise to the Famous Phrase 40 Acres & a Mule," which is hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and features additional commentary from Evelynn Hammonds of Harvard University and Farah Griffin of Columbia University, who discuss the unfulfilled promises of land to African Americans after the Civil War, and how this denied Black families the opportunity to invest in an economic future. The video specifically focuses on the origins of the phrase, "Forty Acres and a Mule," which was part of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Special Field Order No. 15 that was issued on January 16, 1865, to allot land and leftover Army mules to formerly enslaved African American families. The video also connects the issue to the recent passage of H.R. 40 in Congress, which aims to create a commission to examine the merits of introducing reparations to African Americans for slavery.
