The Library of Congress presents a 1940 historical interview, conducted by John A. and Ruby T. Lomax with Billy McCrea--a formerly enslaved individual from Jasper, Texas, that provides an enslaved perspective in regards to the activities surrounding the emancipation of the enslaved in Texas after General Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, which became known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. McCrea discusses the kind of work he done while he was enslaved as well as the Union soldiers leaving Texas once the Civil War was over and the remaining enslaved individuals were freed.
