Chronicling America features an 1865 Wheeling Daily Register newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an account of General Gordon Granger's delivery of General Order No. 3 to the citizens of Texas on June 19, 1865, declaring that all enslaved individuals were to be freed, which became known as "Juneteenth"--also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. According to the account, Granger counseled the formerly enslaved "to remain on the plantations and continue to work," warning them against the dangers of "idleness."
