Description
Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education features four lesson plans for teaching the history of Chinese workers' contributions to the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. Each lesson features: an introduction to the material, objectives, connections to U.S. curriculum standards, list of materials, daily procedural plans, comprehension questions, and assessment criteria.
Lesson 1 focuses on cultivating research skills, appreciating multiple perspectives, and gaining an understanding of the contributions of Chinese workers on the Transcontinental Railroad and westward expansion of the United States.
Lesson 2 focuses on the impact of Chinese exclusionary laws in the U.S. and how they shaped impacted Chinese immigrants over time.
Lesson 3 focuses on the environmental impact of the Transcontinental Railroad and how it impacted people’s lives.
Lesson 4 focuses on the history of San Francisco’s Chinatown and analyzing primary sources. The website also includes a collection of photographs from the Transcontinental Railroad.
