The New York Public Library features a political cartoon (1870), by artist Thomas Nast, in which White men stand atop a wall and Chinese men stand at the bottom, with the inscription, "The 'Chinese wall' around the United States of America." A ladder appears to be falling away from the wall. The inscription at the bottom of the illustration reads, "Throwing Down The Ladder By Which They Rose."
