The University of Massachusetts presents an 1852 historical speech, given by Charles Sumner (LR-MA)--the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate--to United States Senate, in which Sumner addresses the need for the repel of the Fugitive Slave Bill, which was a part of the Compromise of 1850 and required escaped enslaved individuals to be returned to their enslavers even if residing in a free state.
