The Library of Congress features an 1883 historical illustration, drawn by Gaylord Watson, that depicts various formerly enslaved, African Americans prominently known in the senate, featuring a portrait of Frederick Douglass--who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--in the center of the illustration surrounded by portraits of Benjamin S. Turner, Reverend Richard Allen, H.R. Revels, Josiah T. Walls, Joseph H. Rainey, and William Wells Brown. Below the portraits are various scenes from plantations that depicts enslaved individuals working in a cotton field as well as scenes featuring the homes in which they lived.
