Chronicling America features a October 28, 1871 article, writer unknown, from the Cairo Daily newspaper on the Chinese Massacre of 1871 in Los Angeles. The article provides the perspective that a Chinese man shot another and when an officer tried to arrest the shooter, he and a citizen were shot. Subsequently, according to the article, a mob of 500 armed men "attacked the whole Chinese quarters and were resisted by the Chinese." The article goes into detail about the methods used by the mob against the Chinese, the condition of bodies found lynched, and other casualties including a child.
