Chronicling America features a November 17, 1871 article, writer unknown, from the Centre Reporter newspaper on the Chinese Massacre of 1871 in Los Angeles. The article provides the perspective that two rival Chinese companies got into a quarrel and when officers and citizens tried to "separate and arrest the combatants," the Chinese groups shot at them. Subsequently, according to the article, a mob of 500 armed men of "native Californians, the dregs of society" surrounded the Chinese quarter and attacked them. The article provides a detailed account of why and how the mob killed Chinese people, (including one child), the perception that the "officers of the law were powerless," a description of where the event took place- in "Negro-alley," and an assessment on the whereabouts of the guilt and innocent.
