Description
Note: 2nd column, top.
Chronicling America features an 1866 Sugar Planter newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides an account in support of President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction Plan--which granted amnesty to anyone directly or indirectly involved in the rebellion against the Union as long as they sign an oath of allegiance, except for the major Confederate leaders and anyone whose estates costed more than $20,000 in 1860--and his insistence on ex-Confederate states participating in congressional activities. According to the account, "Give us our representation in the halls of Congress--return to the States the sovereignty of which they were deprived by the war--show the Southern people that confidence in their good faith is restored--bury all feelings for the past and the American Union, prouder and statlier than before, will rise a towering monument to the admiration of mankind."
