Description
The Library of Congress features an 1866 historical illustration, drawn by Thomas Nast, that depicts Andrew Johnson "as the deceitful Iago who betrayed Othello, portrayed...as an African American Civil War veteran" in the center of the illustration. Surrounding them are vignettes of slave auctions, white violence against African Americans, and a snake wrapped around an African American man. The caption of the illustration reads, "Othello, dost thou mock me? Iago. I mock you! No, by Heaven: Would you would bear your fortunes like a man."
