Description
Note: 3rd column, bottom.
Chronicling America features an 1865 State Rights Democrat newspaper article, written by an unknown author, that provides a short account deemed an "abolition view" in support of President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction Plan--which granted amnesty to anyone directly or indirectly involved in the rebellion against the Union as long as they sign an oath of allegiance, except for the major Confederate leaders and anyone whose estates costed more than $20,000 in 1860--and in support of his stance that ex-Confederate states should be allowed to participate in congressional activities. According to the account, "The generous policy will cease to find favor; doctrines of Federal supremacy and of the need of Federal interposition will get into vogue; the strong arm of military force will be exerted; and for years to come, the South States, which have now an opportunity of embarking on a career of freedom and prosperity, will sink into mere territorial dependencies, if not subjected to an ignominious military vassalage."
