Description
The Library of Congress features an 1868 historical illustration that depicts the artist's interpretations of various scenes during the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson (D-TN)--who became the 17th President of the United States after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865. The first scene depicts the sergeant-at-arms leading a young boy away from one of the viewing galleries with the caption reading "sergeant-at-arms cleaning the galleries;" the second scene depicts Thaddeus Stevens standing behind Anna Dickinson while she is on the stand with the caption reading "old "Thad," prompting Ms. Anna Dickinson;" the third scene depicts a man holding a sign with the caption reading "our impeachment artist;" the fourth scene depicts a man carruing a bucket and a ladder with the caption reading "'occasional,' the great "poster" of impeachment;" the fifth scene depicts a man with his head laying on his arm while on the stand with the caption reading "'Sen' Wade weeping for his intended mistress of the 'White House';" and the sixth scene depicts a man leaning over a railing with the caption reading "John A. Bingham, the "the Woman Hanger'."
