The Library of Congress presents an 1866 historical illustration that depicts an acrobat holding masks in its two outstretched hands while balancing on the heads of Pennsylvania congressman Thaddeus Stevens--who holds a paper labeled "Committee of 15" and is seated on an African American man, who is on all fours--to the head of an unidentified man (possibly Andrew Johnson)--who is holding the U.S. Constitution with his back turned with several geese, some alive and some dead, at his feet. The illustration's caption, which is represented as the acrobat's word, says, "As yet, I have found no difficulty in standing upon my own platform."
