The University of North Carolina Special Collections Library provides a photo of Laura Towne and Ellen Murray taken by Helen C. Jenks sometime between 1892 and 1893. Towne and Murray were White abolitionists, missionaries, and educators from the North. In the photo, Towne and Murray are pictured among a group of African American scholars in front of the old Darrah Hall. In this picture, the cooking, carpentry, and printing classes are represented; not shown are the younger children.
