Harvard Library presents the 1901 article, "Pioneer Work on the Sea Islands," by White abolitionist, missionary, educator, and physician, Laura Matilda Towne. The article was published in The Southern Workman Monthly (Hampton Institute) a few days before her death. Themes include: the history of the Port Royal Colony, Towne's firsthand experiences with African Americans on St. Helena Island in Beaufort, South Carolina, the establishment of Penn School, and her perception of the school's success in promoting education and sharing culture.
