The American Philosophical Society presents a 2016 article, by Professor Thomas C. Holt, titled "Legacies 'Disremembered:' Re-reading Moments of Emancipation." Holt considers the memory of the Gideonites - a group of Northern abolitionist missionaries - and their impact during the Port Royal Experiment in the South Carolina Sea Islands during and after the Civil War. The article includes observations made by Thomas Wentworth Higginson - a high ranking Union officer and abolitionist - who spent time among the Gideonites.
