Downs and Kate Masur, that provides an account of the creation of a national monument to the Reconstruction Era in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The writers provide their perspectives on Reconstruction, and highlight notable Reconstruction Era landmarks around Beaufort such as the Penn Center- one of the first schools for formerly enslaved African Americans established on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
