Description
The University of North Carolina Special Collections Library features a 1930 letter, by W. H. Peet, about his visit to Penn School- one of the first schools for formerly enslaved African Americans established on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Peet includes an account of notable women in the school's history, including Laura Matilda Towne, Ellen Murray, Rossa Cooley, and Grace House, the development of the school's educational focus, and students' attitude toward education.
