Description
The Harvard Library provides a handbook created in 1937 by the senior class at Penn School, one of the first schools for formerly enslaved African Americans established on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina in 1862. The handbook includes a forward from the students, messages of greetings from the vice-president of the school, Rossa Cooley, and the president, Grace House. Other themes include: a historical overview of St. Helena and Penn School, a list of contracts between 1862 and 1937, community council organizations, the St. Helena Seven Point Program, songs and prayers, and a benediction. Historical photographs are also featured.
