The Freedmen and Southern Society Project provides a letter written by Reverend Abram Mercherson on August 12, 1864 to Major General John Gray Foster, which was originally published in The Wartime Genesis of Free Labor: The Lower South. Mercherson, who wrote on behalf of the freedpeople in Mitchelville - one of the first Black self-governing communities, located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - to protest the violence of White Union soldiers on Black residents.
