Description
The University of North Carolina Special Collections Library features a 1904 photo, by Helen C. Jenks, that shows the classroom of Ellen Murray - a White missionary teacher - at the Penn School, which was one of the first schools for newly freed African Americans on St. Helena Island in Beaufort, South Carolina. Murray was one of the co-founders of the school.
