Reynolds, which provide brief commentary on different aspects in the life of Samuel Jones Lee- a formerly enslaved man turned attorney and first Black Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Book page 234 offers an account of Lee's impact as president of the board at the University of South Carolina while book page 261 claims that Lee was "active in the Republican schemes of plunder--having admitted under oath that when a member of the House he had taken bribes."
