Description
The South Carolina Legislature features a resolution introduced and adopted by the South Carolina House of Representatives on March 3, 2015, introducing and adopting a House resolution to "recognize and honor the [five] men of color who founded Aiken County in 1871 and to dedicate March 10, 2015 as 'Aiken Founders Day in South Carolina'." The resolution acknowledges Samuel Jones Lee - a formerly enslaved man turned attorney and South Carolina politician (R - SC) - as being among the most important founders of Aiken County. The other four men are: Prince Rivers, Charles D. Haynes, William B. Jones, and Gloster H. Holland.
