Description
Note: See 5th column, 6th paragraph.
Chronicling America provides a February 27, 1893 article, writer unknown, from The Indianapolis Journal newspaper, that summarizes and promotes "First Days Amongst the Contrabands," a memoir written by Elizabeth Hyde Botume. Botume was a White missionary teacher who was sent to teach newly freed people in the South Carolina Sea Islands during the Port Royal Experiment in 1864. The review states that the book recounts the "personal experiences" of Botume, which is told in a "matter-of-fact way without any attempt at fine writing," which resulted in "a simple, truthful and sincere narrative of an interesting experience."
