The Digital Public Library of America features an 1868 historical illustration, drawn by Thomas Nast and published in Vanity Fair, that depicts Senator Charles Sumner (LR-MA)--the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate--dressed in a suit and standing between a desk and a chair with his glasses in his right hand and his left hand on his hip. Sumner is also depicted with an over-pronounced stomach. The caption reads, "The Massive Grievance."
