The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History presents an 1887 historical letter, written by Frederick Douglass--a formerly enslaved African American, who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--to an unknown recipient, that describes the circumstances under which African Americans were living after the passing of Jim Crow legislation. In the letter, Douglass says, "wrongs are not much now written in laws which all may see – but the hidden practices of people who have not yet, abandoned the idea of Mastery and dominion over their fellow man."
