Chronicling America features an 1866 North Branch Democrat newspaper article, written by "Age," that provides an opinion against Senator Charles Sumner's (LR-MA)--the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate--declaration that there would be a rebellion in the United States, as there was in Haiti, if African Americans were not grant suffrage. According to the account, "The American reaction, we trust, will not be as sharp as the French one, but it may come, and the cry against Charles Sumner may be as loud as one once was, here in the North--here in Philadelphia--against John Brown."
