Note: Some language may be offensive to readers; racial epithets used.
Internet Archive features the memoir of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a Union Army officer who served as the colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers- one of the first Black regiments to fight in the Civil War. In his 1870 memoir, Army Life in a Black Regiment, Higginson makes several references to Sergeant Prince Rivers, a formerly enslaved man turned Union Army officer. Higginson described Rivers as a "fine-looking" man who also spoke "very effectively" (page 41), and commented that he was not only a "color-sergeant," but also "provost sergeant," giving him "entire charge of the prisoners and of the daily policing of the camp" (page 57). Higginson also states that Rivers served in the South Carolina Constitutional Convention and was a member of the State Legislature (page 265).
