Themes include: Rivers' perspective on what makes an honorable soldier, his duty to take care of women and children, the bravery of Black soldiers who were no longer afraid to fight their "old masters," collaboration among Black and White soldiers in the Union Army, and how he believed that land should be distributed among the freedpeople in the South.
