Chronicling America presents a April 1, 1899 article, writer unknown, from the Silver State newspaper on the fifteen "prominent citizens" who would be put on trial for the lynching of Frazier Baker. Baker was the first Black postmaster in Lake City, South Carolina. He was murdered, along with his one year old daughter, in a racial terror attack by armed White men in 1898. The article noted that this was "the first time on record that the Federal Government has come into the south to take up a lynching trial."
