The Zinn Education Project presents a lesson plan, written by Bill Bigelow, that asks students to empathize with Frederick Douglass--a formerly enslaved African American, who became known for his prominent role in the abolitionist movement as well as for his speeches and writing against the institution of slavery--in his attempts to be free of his enslavers by asking them to drawn on their own experiences in which they resisted those seeking to control them. Compenents include: primary sources, secondary source, suggested procedures, and a handout.
