Chronicling America presents an October 6, 1907 article, by A. W. Dimock, from The Richmond Palladium and Sun-Telegram newspaper offering a perspective on, and critique of, African Americans in the South. The writer makes a reference to Hastings Gantt - a formerly enslaved African American landowner and former representative in South Carolina State Legislature - and indicates that he had returned to his pre-war occupation of "driving a team" of horses between Beaufort and the village of Frogmore on St. Helena Island.
