The National Archives features a historical photograph of a group of male "contrabands" - formerly enslaved people who escaped to Union lines - in a Union Army camp standing in front of contraband housing. The source includes the photo, the original caption and a transcription of the caption under "Scope & Content" that describes contraband as "happy, good-natured fellows," that "made lots of fun for the soldiers".
