The Gettysburg, Musselman Library presents an 1861 Harper's Weekly political cartoon, by John McLenan, depicting caricatures of two Black men standing outside of a fort, having a conversation. In the caption, it includes what it calls the "First Contraband Article" and the conversation between the two men. The conversation is in non standard English. The source includes a description, background information on the cartoon, and a transcription of the inscription.
